Summer Term 1    Newsletter       Miss Smith

The year 1 team hope that you all had a wonderful Easter and invite your children back to the next school term where there is new and exciting learning to be had.

This half term we will be going back in time to look at toys both past and present, to see how they have developed and changed. When looking at these changes the children will also be putting their Science skills to the test as we look at materials that where and have been used to make toys. Also, the book that we shall be reading and writing about in English is a very famous book about a toy puppet named ‘Pinocchio’. We will be learning letter writing skills as we send a letter to Geppetto from the Whale’s stomach. Not only will we be studying and making puppets from the past but also designing and creating a toy of the future within our Art and Design lessons.

Maths –This term we will be focusing on addition and subtraction problem solving. We will also be revisiting 3D shapes and their properties and measurement through Art and Design. There has been an improvement with more children becoming more confident with their number bonds but we as a reminder please practice the number bonds your child comes home with regularly as the expectation for year 1 is that by the end of the year they will know their number bonds to 10, 20 and count in 2s, 5s and 10s accurately and independently.

English –This term in English the children will be developing their descriptive story writing skills as well as understanding basic letter writing skills whilst we study the classic story of ‘Pinocchio’.

Spelling- the children will be learning year 1 spelling families of which they will receive 8 spellings per week.

Ms Brame’s group will continue with year 1 common exception words receiving 5 spellings per week.

Grammar-will be taught through the English lessons and some discreet lessons.

Phonics- All children will be having phonics sessions to support both their reading, writing and spelling.

RE is a core subject and this term the children will be learning about the Jewish faith. In particular the influence of the Torah on how Jewish people live their lives.

PSHE Through PSHE the children will learn about tolerance, differences and similarities between people,  disabilities, e-safety and relationships.

PE is a core subject and every child is expected to take part in these lessons.  Our lessons will take place on a Monday and Wednesday. The children will be learning to practise ball skills and how to work effectively in teams.

Please can I remind you that all school uniform, P.E kit and other garments need to be named as there are a lot of items being misplaced in school.

Reading: Your child will be reading daily in class through different subjects. I have attached reading targets in your child's reading record so that you are able to support there reading progress.   Please ensure you listen to your child read, discuss and ask questions about the books, as often as possible during the week and note in their reading record that you have done.  If you are unsure of the type of questions you should be asking please make an appointment to see me so that I can advise you. The more their reading skills improve, the more opportunities open up to them. Reading is key to all learning.

Please ensure your child brings their reading book into school every day.

Homework

Maths- We test the children weekly on their knowledge of number bonds to 10 and to 20 when secure. We practise at school but we do urge you to practise these regularly at home as this will really enhance your child’s future capabilities in Maths.

Spellings- will be sent home weekly. There will be a focus on spelling families. These will be sent home on Mondays and the children will tested on these spellings on them the following Friday.

I do also urge that you do not come into the building when dropping off or collecting your child as we are trying to develop independence with the children and part of this is giving children the responsibility of putting away their own things in the morning when they arrive.

If you have any concerns or require further information about what your child is doing in school, then please make an appointment with the office to see me.  Please support your child with their homework and if your child or you are not sure what is expected, please just ask.
