Summer Term 2    Newsletter       Miss Smith

Summer is here and the year 1 team hope that your children are ready for a half term full of learning and fun. With this being the final half term we have lots of interesting things happening such as sports day, special awards and visitors.

This half term we will be delving around inside the human body in our topic work. Finding out about all the different senses we have, sight, smell, sound, touch and taste in practical and exciting ways. We will also be having a real nurse come in to tell us about her job and to show us equipment that she uses. As well as this our new book for this half term is called ‘The Way Back Home’ which is about a boy who travels to space in his aeroplane but gets stranded on a strange planet. This will link in with our art and DT work as we will be designing and making our own spaceships to help the boy return home.

Maths –This term we will be focusing on strengthening the children’s weaker areas of Maths such as time and measurement as well as multiplication and division. We also apply Mathematical knowledge taught at the beginning of the week into reasoning and problem solving lessons every Friday. This is in order to get them prepared for the year 2 curriculum. As we approach the end of the academic year I would like to remind everyone to please practice the number bonds your child comes home with regularly as your child should know their Number bonds to 10 and 20 by the end of the year and be beginning to count in 2’s, 5’s an 10’s.

English –This term in English the children will be developing their Science fiction writing in our new class book ‘The Way Back Home’. We will not only be covering the basics in using capital letters, finger spaces and full stops but more advanced writing techniques to stretch the children’s writing skills for example: alliteration and onomatopoeia.

Spelling- The children will be learning year 1 spelling families of which they will receive 8 spellings per week.

Ms Brame’s group will continue with year 1 common exception words receiving 5 spellings per week.

Grammar-will be taught through the English lessons and some discreet lessons.

Phonics- In the next week or two all children will undergo a Phonics screening test with Miss Simmonds. You will then be informed as to whether your child has passed. All children will be having phonics sessions to support both their reading, writing and spelling both before and after the screening. As well as this every Tuesday we will have a 30 minute reading comprehension lesson. This is where children will have a short piece of writing. Fiction/ non-fiction/ poetry and will then be asked questions about what they have read in order to support the children in gaining more understanding of what they are reading.

RE is a core subject and this term the children will be learning about the Jewish faith. In particular how God and Jesus inspire Christians and share ideas about them and the Bible.

PSHE Through PSHE the children will learn about tolerance, differences and similarities between people,  disabilities, e-safety and relationships.

PE is a core subject and every child is expected to take part in these lessons.  Our lessons will take place on a Monday and Tuesday. The children will be learning practising different events for sports day, including bean bag throw, Egg and spoon, long jump and skipping.

Please can I remind you that all school uniform, P.E kit and other garments need to be named as there are a lot of items being misplaced in school.
