5JdB Class letterJanuary 2019

Happy New Year! I hope that you enjoyed a restful and happy festive season.

Year 5 have launched straight into 2019 by jumping back in time 1200 years to the time of the Maya! We have an exciting term ahead exploring their time, culture, beliefs, societies and, of course, the discovery of chocolate! We will be exploring gears, pulleys, levers and springs in our ‘Forces’ science topic and even cooking with chocolate.

As well as continuing to evolve our knowledge, understanding and use of grammar techniques, our focus during our English lessons will be on stories from other cultures. We will also be looking at discussion texts where the children will learn to write a balanced discussion that takes into account several different ideas or perspectives.

We will be reading daily in class through different subjects, but please ensure that you listen to your child read as often as possible during the week, encouraging your child to talk about what they have read.  Please note in their reading record that you have done so. We ask children to read at least three times a week at home - please ensure your child brings their reading book and reading record into school every day. Reading checks will be carried out on a regular basis, and the skills children are developing will be reinforced throughout the curriculum.

Your child will come home with a new list of spellings on a Monday which they need to practise each day.  Please encourage them to read, sound out and write the words carefully. They will be tested on the following Monday.

In Mathematics we will be exploring fractions, multiplication and division and statistics through a range of written, mental and investigative strategies. Sumdog and Rockstars (times tables) are set each week as homework to support and enhance the work being covered in the classroom.

In RE we are exploring what prayer means to Christians, Jews and Muslims and to ourselves.

PE this term will be on Tuesdays and Fridays so please make sure that your child has appropriate kit for both indoor and outdoor sessions and that earrings have been removed on those days.

If you have any concerns that you would like to discuss, please do not hesitate to get in touch.
