Mr Savage's Class Autumn Term 1 Newsletter.

I would like to welcome you to the Autumn 1 term. This newsletter will give you some information on what the children will be learning during this term.

Theme

Our theme lessons this term are all about a man who has an incredible legacy in our local community. The children will be learning about Charles Wicksteed and the always popular Wicksteed park.

Maths

Our maths lessons this term see us learning about place value and number. The children will build upon previous knowledge and use this to solve a range of problems and challenges.

English

Our English lessons this term will see us writing traditional tales and stories with a fantasy setting. We will be reading a version of the famous Pinocchio story and exploring Benji Davies' book "Granddad's Island".

Science

Our young scientists will be investigating common plants including wild plants and trees. The children will be finding out just how amazing the plants we see everyday really are!

P.E.

Our P.E. lessons this term will see the children developing their throwing and catching skills. Using a range of equipment, the children will take part in lots of different games and activities. As well as this, we will be finding out how we can live and healthy and active life.

R.E.

The children's R.E. learning this term will see us finding out about people in Christianity. This will also support the children in understanding our school's Christian values.

We will be beginning our computing journey this year by developing and recording sequences of instructions as an algorithm.

PSHE

We will explore subjects such as disability and e-safety, allowing the children to discuss and debate their opinions.

The children will be looking at different types of playground equipment and finding out how they work. They will also design and make their own models of playground equipment.

Homework

Spellings- will be sent home weekly, there will be a focus on  common exception words and then learning spelling rules. These will be sent home on Mondays and the children will tested on these spellings on  Fridays.

Number bonds/times tables – daily number bonds/times table practise is essential for the children’s learning journey.

Reading Your child will be reading daily in class through different subjects. Please ensure you listen to your child read, discuss and ask questions about the books, as often as possible during the week and note in their reading record that you have done so. The more their reading skills improve, the more opportunities open up to them. Reading is key to all learning.

Please ensure your child brings their reading book into school every day.

PE Kit

PE is a core subject and every child is expected to take part in these lessons.  Our lessons will take place on a Tuesdays and Fridays.  . Please ensure your child has their PE kit: black or navy shorts, plain white or blue school t-shirt and plimsolls in school for these days and that earrings have been removed. (We are not allowed to remove them.)  As the weather gets colder please send  leggings or tracksuit bottoms so that we can still go outside.
