Mr Savage's Class Autumn Term 1 Newsletter.
I would like to welcome you to the Autumn 1 term. This newsletter will give you some information on what the children will be learning during this term.
Our first theme of the year is entitled “Vikings vs. Anglo Saxons”. The children will be exploring the origins of the Vikings and Anglo Saxons and understand how their fighting led to the kingdom we know today.
During our maths lessons the children will consolidate their knowledge of written methods of calculation and use these in a context. We will also ensure a secure understanding of place value and number.
Our English lessons this term will see us writing Viking myths from a character's viewpoint and looking at story settings.
Our young scientists will learn about the properties of materials and carry out a range of experiments exploring reversible and irreversible changes.
We will be learning some of the basic skills required to put together our own gymnastics routine.
Our R.E. lessons will give the children the opportunity to discover what we can learn from stories of faith.
We will be becoming game developers and developing our own interactive game!
We will explore subjects such as disability and e-safety, allowing the children to discuss and debate their opinions.
Children will explore Viking clothing and go through the process of designing and making their own Viking brooch.
Year 5 Homework
English and maths homework will be issued on Sumdog on a Thursday and must be completed (either in school or at home) by the following Monday. Spellings are given out and tested on a Friday. All children are also expected to practise their times tables for their weekly test.
