Year 5 and 6 Newsletter for Autumn Term 1

Welcome to Year 5 and 6 with Ms Harle and Mrs Tressler. Please find below the outline for learning in the first term. We are looking forward to working with you children and providing them with many exciting learning experiences as they continue on their journey through St Mary’s.

Our theme for term one is Anglo-Saxons verses Vikings. Through using a wide variety of historical sources, the children will be finding out about what it was like to live in Britain during the Anglo-Saxon and Viking times. What were their houses like? What food did they eat? Why did they invade? How did they travel?

Our learning theme will also be supporting our English learning as we will use a variety of texts with a Viking theme. Our main focus will be on improving our writing and ensuring that we are using high level punctuation and vocabulary to engage our readers. “Erik the Viking” will be our inspiration for our own Viking Saga which we are looking forward to publishing in our first class book.

Place value will be our focus in Maths, ensuring that as learners we have the vocabulary and understanding to accurately describe the place value of individual digits within a number of up to 5 digits. The children will be ordering, comparing and rounding numbers of up to 5 digits. The children will then look at refining their mental and written methods for addition and subtraction ensuring they are working efficiently and accurately at all times.

My focus will be to promote a love of reading for all our children by immersing them in a range of high quality texts in a range of genres and by many different authors. We will begin by sharing the archaic text “Tom’s Midnight Garden” by Philippa Pearce where the children will be exposed to a beautifully written story which they will use to make predictions and inferences using their background knowledge to support their responses.

The children will be learning about the three states of matter: solid, liquid and gas and how the different way that the particles are arranged effects the properties of the different states. Through practical experiences and the opportunity to investigate, the children will learn and be able to explain why different materials behave in different ways.

Our theme for RE lessons will be Creation. Creation and Science; conflicting or complementary

The children will learn about how to ensure they use the internet safely at all times. They will also be learning about protective behaviours and developing their understanding of the qualities needed to live in the world today.

Art / Design Technology

Supporting our learning in our theme lessons, the children will be working with a range of materials to build an accurate representation of a Viking Longboat considering the sizes, proportions, materials and colours that they use.

What do you like to do? The children will learn to give opinions about things they like to do or not (sports, cinema, TV). They will memorise words and short sentences through repetition and games. They will understand other people’s opinions through reading and listening.

PE is a core subject and every child is expected to take part in these lessons.  Our lessons will take place on a Monday and a Thursday. Our Year 6 children will be swimming on a Monday afternoon so please ensure they have their swimming kit in school.  Please ensure your child has their PE kit: black or navy shorts, plain white or blue school t-shirt and plimsolls/trainers in school for these days and that earrings have been removed. (We are not allowed to remove them.)

It is important that the children are reading every night and that you take the time to talk to them about their story to ensure they understand what they are reading. Please record this reading in your child’s reading record.

Spellings will be sent home on a Monday and tested on a Friday. Please ensure your child is practicing their spellings by writing them daily into their spelling books and recalling their spelling regularly.

Times tables will be tested every Friday. Please encourage your child to use TT Rockstars to practice their times tables regularly. This programme has been proven to significantly improve the children’s speed of recall of times tables facts in a short period of time when used regularly.

Maths and English homework will be set on Sumdog on a Friday and should be completed by the following Wednesday. If your child does not have access to the internet at home, I will ensure that they are given access to a laptop at lunchtimes to complete this.

Please support your child with their homework. If either you or your child are unsure of the homework expectations please do not hesitate to come and talk to me.
