Spring  Term 1     Newsletter       Mrs Perry

Welcome back. Myself and  Mrs Fritz hope you and your families have enjoyed the festive period and have had lots of fun. This term  we have  a pleasure of Mr Nicol  joining us a student teacher.

This terms theme is ‘Castle, Dungeons and Dragons.' Through this theme, the children will learn all about why castles were built, who lived in them and what they were used for.

Maths –This term the children will continue to learn their times tables and  quick recall of number bonds to 10 and 20. The expectation for year 2 is that by the end of the year they will know their 2, 5 and 10 x tables.  They will continue to work on addition, subtraction, multiplication,   division strategies and fractions and apply these to solve word problems. They will also be learning to use measurement to record mass, length and capacity and temperature.  They will  learn about the properties of both 2D and 3D shapes.

English – In English, we will be using George and the Dragon and Robin Hood to complete story writing. We will also  be doing extended writing and will be learning how to edit and improve our writing. We will be reading across the curriculum and apply our reading skills during comprehension activities to answer questions about  texts. Grammar, spelling and phonics is taught  discreetly and through  English lessons.

RE-  For the next two  terms the children will be  learning about, The Family in Judaism.

PSHE- This term the children will learn about why relationships are important, why we need to exercise, how to deal with feelings and e-safety.

PE is a core subject and every child is expected to take part in these lessons.  Our lessons will take place on a Tuesday and Wednesday Please ensure your child has their PE kit: black or navy shorts, plain white or blue school t-shirt and plimsolls in school for these days and that earrings have been removed. (We are not allowed to remove them.

Homework

Sumdog  English and Maths  homework is set online every Monday. In addition to this, weekly spellings,  times tables or number bonds  practice and reading  is set.

Please continue to hear your child read and discuss the books they are reading.

Remember "If you can read, you can do anything!"

https://www.spellzone.com

a great site to  use to practice all year 2 spellings. Go to word lists and then curriculum lists, where you will find year 2 lists. You do not need to pay to access this.

Each year we are left with lots of un-named school uniform. Could you please make sure all clothing is named as it is much easier to find if it is misplaced.

If you have any concerns or require further information about what your child is going to be doing in school, then please feel free to come and see me. Please support your child with their homework and if your child or you are not sure what is expected, please just ask.

Reading: Your child will be reading daily in class through different subjects. I have  attached reading targets in your child's reading record so that you  are able to support there reading progress.   Please ensure you listen to your child read, discuss  and ask questions about the books, as often as possible during the week and note in their reading record that you have done.  If you are unsure of the type of questions you should be asking please make an appointment to see me so that I can  advise you. The more their reading skills improve, the more opportunities open up to them. Reading is key to all learning.

Please ensure your child brings their reading book into school every day.

Homework

We are  going to be setting English and Maths homework using Sumdog, an app that can be accessed  via the school website. The children will  have their own log on details and I will be tracking their progress through the program. New homework will be set  every Monday.  If your child does not have access to  internet to complete their homework please let me know.

Spellings- will be sent home weekly. there will be a focus on  common exception words and then learning spelling rules. These will be sent home on  Mondays and the children will tested on these spellings on  Fridays. I have attached a copy of both  year 1 and 2 common exception words which the children need to be able to read and spell.

If you have any concerns or require further information about what your child is going to be doing in school, then please feel free to come and see me. Please support your child with their homework and if your child or you are not sure what is expected, please just ask.
