Autumn Term 1     Newsletter       Mrs Perry

Mrs Fritz  and I would like to welcome you to the start of a new academic year. We are really looking forward to working with your children and we have lots of exciting things to look forward to. We are also looking forward to  working with Miss Reeve a trainee teacher, who will be with us this term and in the summer term.

We have some exciting new  themes this year and are starting off with ‘Where in the world?’ which we will  study until Christmas.  Through this theme, the children will develop their geographical knowledge about the countries that make up the UK, seas surrounding the UK, capital cities and  continents  and seas of the world. They will also  learn about which countries our  food comes from and look at  food miles linked to this. Our science is linked to this topic as we will be looking at  animals and their habitats and how and why they live in particular places.  In art,  the children will be studying artists from around the world and  develop their art skills linked to these artists. I am hoping to arrange a trip for the end of September linked to our science topic, habitats. Information will follow.

Maths –This term the main focus will learning about place value, addition and subtraction, as well as, recapping on number bonds to 10 and 20 and learning their times tables. The expectation  for year 2 is that by the end of the year they will know their number bonds to 10, 20 and 100, their 2, 5 and 10 times tables and be able to count in 3s.

English –This term the focus for English, are stories from other cultures and we are starting with  Bringing the Rain to Kapiti Plain, a story  set in Africa. We will then  use the book, The Dragon Kite which is set in China. The children will also be  writing in other subjects throughout the year.

Spelling- the children will be learning the year 2 spelling rules and common exception words.

Grammar-will be taught through the English lessons and some discreet lessons.

Phonics- some children will still be having phonics sessions to support both their reading and writing.

RE is a core subject and this term  the children will be learning about our key values and what it means to be part of a church school.

PSHE Through PSHE the children will learn about tolerance, differences and similarities between people,  disabilities, e-safety and relationships.

PE is a core subject and every child is expected to take part in these lessons.  Our lessons will take place on a Monday and Wednesday.  On Mondays the children will be doing Taekwondo with a qualified instructor. Please ensure your child has their PE kit: black or navy shorts, plain white or blue school t-shirt and plimsolls in school for these days and that earrings have been removed. (We are not allowed to remove them.)  As the weather gets colder please send  leggings or tracksuit bottoms so that we can still go outside.

Each year we are left with lots of un-named school uniform. Could you please make sure all clothing is named as it is much easier to find if it is misplaced.

Reading: Your child will be reading daily in class through different subjects. I have  attached reading targets in your child's reading record so that you  are able to support there reading progress.   Please ensure you listen to your child read, discuss  and ask questions about the books, as often as possible during the week and note in their reading record that you have done.  If you are unsure of the type of questions you should be asking please make an appointment to see me so that I can  advise you. The more their reading skills improve, the more opportunities open up to them. Reading is key to all learning.

Please ensure your child brings their reading book into school every day.

Homework

We are  going to be setting English and Maths homework using Sumdog, an app that can be accessed  via the school website. The children will  have their own log on details and I will be tracking their progress through the program. New homework will be set  every Monday.  If your child does not have access to  internet to complete their homework please let me know.

Spellings- will be sent home weekly. there will be a focus on  common exception words and then learning spelling rules. These will be sent home on  Mondays and the children will tested on these spellings on  Fridays. I have attached a copy of both  year 1 and 2 common exception words which the children need to be able to read and spell.

If you have any concerns or require further information about what your child is going to be doing in school, then please feel free to come and see me. Please support your child with their homework and if your child or you are not sure what is expected, please just ask.
