Key Stage 1 Autumn Term 1 Newsletter
The Key Stage 1 team would like to welcome you to the Autumn 1 term. This newsletter will give you some information about what the children will be learning during this term.
During our theme lessons this term we will be Kettering Detectives! The children will be learning about the area in which they live and go to school as we venture around the local area using our Geography and History skills.
Our maths lessons this term see us working on place value and calculations through a range of concrete, pictorial and abstract learning. There will also be lots of opportunities for reasoning and problem solving.
The children's English lessons vary depending upon the group in which they are working. All children will have the opportunity to write regularly, improve their vocabulary and read some wonderful texts.
Our young scientists will be investigating and learning about materials. Our learning is linked to our Kettering Detectives theme and we’ll be investigating materials found in the local area.
Mr Savages and Mr Middleton’s classes’ P.E. lessons this term focus on gymnastics as we go “Under the Sea”. The children will explore some basic movements and positions and use a range of equipment.
Mrs Perry’s class will be working on team skills and have their first opportunity to learn archery.
We will be learning about Humanism and sharing our ideas about how human beings have improved and can further improve our quality of life and our understanding of the world.
We will explore subjects such as disability and e-safety, allowing the children to discuss and debate their opinions.
Through this unit pupils will learn about the life of Lowry, his inspiration for drawing and his art work. The children will discuss Lowry’s art work, giving their own thoughts about it but also identifying shapes and colours used by Lowry. They will learn how to use pattern, colour, line and shape in art. They will also learn the song- Matchstalk men and matchstalk cats and dogs linked to our art.
Spellings- Will be sent home on a Monday. The children should practise their spellings daily writing them in their book. It is important that spelling books are in on Fridays as the children will be assessed on that week’s spellings in the back of their books. That way you can see which ones they still need practice with.
Number bonds/times tables – these will be sent home on Mondays.
Arithmetic – Our Year 2 children will take home an arithmetic paper on Fridays and this will be due in on a Monday.
Reading - Your child will be reading daily in class through different subjects. Please ensure you listen to your child read, discuss and ask questions about the books, as often as possible during the week and note in their reading record that you have done so. The more their reading skills improve, the more opportunities open up to them. Reading is key to all learning.
Please ensure your child brings their reading book into school every day. The children earn Dojos for every time they read at home.
PE is a core subject and every child is expected to take part in these lessons. While your child will have set days for PE these can change, please ensure your child has their PE kit EVERY DAY.
PE kit: black or navy shorts, plain white or blue school t-shirt and plimsolls in school for these days and that earrings have been removed. (We are not allowed to remove them.)
