Spring Term 1 Newsletter Mrs Perry
Welcome back. I hope you and your families have enjoyed the festive period and have had lots of fun. This term, we have the pleasure of Mr O’Brien joining us a student teacher.
This terms theme is ‘Castle, Dungeons and Dragons.' Through this theme, the children will learn all about why castles were built, who lived in them and what they were used for. This unit will culminate in a castle day on Friday 15th February. Where the children can come dressed as someone who lived in a castle.
Maths –This term the children will continue to learn their times tables and quick recall of number bonds to 10 and 20. The expectation for year 2 is that by the end of the year they will know their 2, 5 and 10 x tables. They will continue to work on addition, subtraction, multiplication, division strategies and fractions and apply these to solve word problems. They will also be learning to use measurement to record mass, length and capacity and temperature. They will learn about the properties of both 2D and 3D shapes.
English – In English, we will be using The Jumblies by Edward Lear, a poetry unit. The children will investigate the language and techniques used, complete comprehension activities, rewrite the poem as story and learn to perform the poem. We will then move onto George and the Dragon where will do story writing and diaries. We will also be learning how to edit and improve our writing. We will be reading across the curriculum and apply our reading skills during comprehension activities to answer questions about texts. Grammar, spelling and phonics is taught discreetly and through English lessons.
RE- The children will be learning about, Humanists and what is important to them.
PSHE- This term the children will learn about why relationships are important, why we need to exercise, how to deal with feelings and e-safety.
PE is a core subject and every child is expected to take part in these lessons. Our lessons will take place on a Monday and Friday(outside weather permitting) Please ensure your child has their PE kit: black or navy shorts, plain white or blue school t-shirt and plimsolls in school for these days and that earrings have been removed. (We are not allowed to remove them.
Year 2 SATS- In May your child will complete the government statutory tests in Reading and Maths. We prepare the children well, through thorough teaching of the National Curriculum and by teaching them techniques they can apply when completing tasks. I would like to give you the opportunity to come and find out more about SATS, at either of two sessions I am holding. I will be sending out slips so that you can let me know which session you can attend.

Sumdog Maths homework is set online and an arithmetic test is sent out weekly and is due back in the following Monday. In addition to this, weekly spellings, times tables or number bonds practice and reading is set.
Please continue to hear your child read and discuss the books they are reading.
Remember "If you can read, you can do anything!"
https://www.spellzone.com a great site to use to practice all year 2 spellings. Go to word lists and then curriculum lists, where you will find year 2 lists. You do not need to pay to access this.
Each year we are left with lots of un-named school uniform. Could you please make sure all clothing is named as it is much easier to find if it is misplaced.
If you have any concerns or require further information about what your child is going to be doing in school, then please feel free to come and see me. Please support your child with their homework and if your child or you are not sure what is expected, please just ask.
