Autumn Term      Newsletter       Mrs Perry

Welcome back.

I hope you all had a fabulous Summer holiday and the children are ready to continue their learning journey with us.

For the whole of the Autumn Term we will be learning about our wonderful world. This half term, through this theme, the children will be learning to read and create maps, improve their atlas skills to locate places in the UK, the World and the oceans. Linked to  this, the children will learn about art across the World and different artists and their techniques, this will all be linked to  developing their knowledge of colour and colour mixing.

Maths –This term the main focus will be learning about place value, addition and subtraction, as well as, learning number bonds to 10,  20 and 100 and  learning times tables. The expectation  for year 2 is that by the end of the year they will know their number bonds to 10, 20 and 100, their 2, 5 and 10 times tables and be able to count in 3s.

English –This term the focus for English, is stories in familiar settings and  we will be using Paddington stories by Michael, Bond, we will learn how to write instructions and  will study a new book called Leaf which looks at relationships and understanding.

Spelling- the children will be learning the year 2 spelling rules and common exception words.

Grammar-will be taught through the English lessons and some discreet lessons.

Phonics- some children will still be having phonics sessions to support both their reading and writing.

RE is a core subject and this term  the children will be exploring our key values.

PSHE Through PSHE the children will learn about rules, confidence in ourselves, disabilities and differences and similarities between people.

PE is a core subject and every child is expected to take part in these lessons.  Our lessons will take place on a Mondays and Fridays  . It is very exciting this term as we have  a karate coach teaching the children on Mondays. Please ensure your child has their PE kit: black or navy shorts, plain white or blue school t-shirt and plimsolls in school for these days and that earrings have been removed. (We are not allowed to remove them.)  As the weather gets colder please send  leggings or tracksuit bottoms so that we can still go outside.

Each year we are left with lots of un-named school uniform. Could you please make sure all clothing is named as it is much easier to find if it is misplaced.

Reading: Your child will be reading daily in class through different subjects. I have  attached reading targets in your child's reading record so that you  are able to support there reading progress.   Please ensure you listen to your child read, discuss  and ask questions about the books, as often as possible during the week and note in their reading record that you have done.  If you are unsure of the type of questions you should be asking please make an appointment to see me so that I can  advise you. The more their reading skills improve, the more opportunities open up to them. Reading is key to all learning.

Please ensure your child brings their reading book into school every day.

I am also going to be offering the children the opportunity to bring home another book  which they like from the library area in key stage 1.

Homework

We are  going to be setting Maths homework using Sumdog, an app that can be accessed  via the school website. The children will  have their own log on details and I will be tracking their progress through the program. New homework will be set  every Monday.  If your child does not have access to  internet to complete their homework please let me know.

Spellings- will be sent home weekly. there will be a focus on  common exception words and then learning spelling rules. These will be sent home on  Mondays and the children will tested on these spellings on  Fridays. They will also have  number bonds or multiplication tables to complete. Occasionally, I may send extra homework out.

If you have any concerns or require further information about what your child is going to be doing in school, then please feel free to come and see me. Please support your child with their homework and if your child or you are not sure what is expected, please just ask.
