Spring 2         Newsletter          Class 1

Spring is on it's way…the days are getting longer and the weather is warming up.

This term we are continuing with our Transport theme.  The focus will be on flight and the history of the first aeroplanes.

Dates for your Diary:

Theatre group- Monday 27th February

Open afternoon- Friday 3rd March

Science days  16th & 17th March

Parent's Evenings 29th and 30th March

Maths: We will continue to build on children's understanding of number bonds (pairs of numbers that add together) to 10, 20 and 100.   We will also focus on measuring length and capacity.  We will continue to learn about money: adding amounts and finding change.

English: We are starting this term with a whole-class unit based on a story called Paradise Garden.  This links with the theatre group that are performing for the children this term.  Later in the term the children will continue to develop their skills in smaller groups.  Comprehension and grammar skills remain a key part of the children's learning.

Science:  Our science focus this term is on the weather and the changes in the seasons.  They will have fun being weather forecasters!  Children will make observations and predictions and record their findings.  We also have 2 Science packed days where children will experience a wide range of scientific investigations and find out about many ways that science effects everyday life.

RE:  This term children will build on their understanding of stories from the Bible.  Children will be encouraged to think about what they can learn from the stories Jesus told as well as Old testament stories.

P.E.

PE is a core subject and every child is expected to take part in these lessons.  Our lessons will take place on a Tuesday and Friday.

Please ensure your child has their PE kit: black or navy shorts, plain white or blue school t-shirt and plimsolls in school for these days and that earrings have been removed . (We are not allowed to remove them.)  As the weather remains cool, warm leggings or tracksuit bottoms are also needed

Reading

Your child will be reading daily in class through different subjects. However, we will listen to your child read at least once a week.  Please ensure you listen to your child read as often as possible during the week and write in their reading record that you have done so. Encourage your child to talk about what they have read and answer questions about the characters and their actions.  Also, encourage your child to sound out the words they are reading to encourage their use of phonics.  Please ensure your child brings their reading book into school every day.

Spellings

Please continue to support your child to learn their spellings each week  They will be tested on the Friday.

Numeracy

Please work with your child on a regular basis to support them with counting, recognising, reading and writing numbers up to 100.  Also, encourage your child to say the number that is one more and one less than a given number.  Each child will also  either be   learning their number bonds to 10 , then 20 or multiplication tables, 2x, 10x. These are sent out on Mondays and will be tested on Fridays.

Please continue to support your child with their homework and if your child or you are not sure what is expected, please let me know at the end of the school day.

Many thanks

Mrs Smith

It has been great having Miss Williams supporting learning in Year 1 and she will continue with us this term.
