Reading is fundamental, it starts on day one when children join St Mary's. In fact, it is one of the most important ingredients to becoming all that you can be.
Reading develops your brain, provides a window into the world around you and helps you do better in all school subjects. That’s why we put reading at the very heart of our curriculum.
We have a wide range of reading materials available for children to enjoy, including: First News, Match Attack, newly released books, poetry, Bible story books, graphic novels and of course a large selection of fiction and non-fiction in our library and reading areas in classrooms.

Raising the profile
A love of reading is developed through a brand-new, easily accessible library, special events including: World Book Day, Reading cafés, Bedtime Stories and Reading under the stars, implementing Talk for Reading, adults in school discussing and loving books and more to come.
We encourage our families to get actively reading.

Reading Under the Stars
As a way of bringing parents and carers together in a calming, relaxing and inviting environment, we have started conducting reading sessions, also known as "Reading Under the Stars".
Floor mats are laid out and LED candlelights are spread evenly across all areas, creating a soothing and tranquil atmosphere.
On our latest session, we had over 42 families attend, and we have received positive and useful feedback. We look forward to arranging more of these valuable sessions for our children.
World Book Day - 7th March 2024
Talk for Reading
In January 2024, we implemented Talk for Reading following whole school training. This has been incredibly successful with positive feedback from all stakeholders (staff, children, governors etc.)
